15 Fixes to Broken Grades - (June 6) Ken O'Connor is a former Curriculum Coordinator with the Scarborough Board of Education in Ontario, Canada. He is an expert on grading and reporting with a particular emphasis on using these techniques to improve student achievement through student involvement. With over twenty years of teaching experience in secondary schools in Australia and Ontario, he has presented hundreds of workshops for teachers at every grade level. Ken is the author of A Repair Kit for Grading: 15 Fixes for Broken Grades, 2/e, Pearson (2010).
Instructional Rounds - (June 14) Develop collaborative processes for exploring and honing instructional practices. Teams of leaders and teachers will understand how to successfully implement instructional rounds. By engaging in deep professional dialogue with peers as part of a structured learning process, teachers increase their skills in creating effective and engaging lessons. Get in the learning groove. We’ll walk your team through the process of setting up, conducting, debriefing, and summarizing experiences from instructional rounds. Teachers will learn how to use the results to identify which instructional practices to continue, rethink, or add. Leaders will learn how to coordinate and facilitate teachers’ observations and conversations before, during, and after instructional rounds.
Awaken the Learner - (July 12) This workshop is the result of a unique collaboration between Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, who was killed in the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, and Dr. Robert J. Marzano, an educational researcher with 40 years of experience. Darrell, Dr. Marzano, and associates from Rachel’s Challenge and Marzano Research present two perspectives on how to awaken students in the classroom. Darrell’s perspective reviews the history and philosophy behind a system of education that reaches students’ hearts, not just their heads. Dr. Marzano’s perspective outlines research-based strategies that teachers can use to both instruct and awaken learners, presenting a model of student motivation that illuminates various ways students think, why they make certain decisions, and how they can be inspired in the classroom.
